We have a voice
With every speculative bubble comes a backlash of activism, fear and concern. The data center bubble is no different.
Right now, large-scale data centers are the focus of national and international debates. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and large language models have been rebranded and presented to the public as the gateway to a miraculous new technological future, and we are given no voice in deciding the course of that future.
News headlines tell us of a new world indifferent to the experiences that make us human—creativity, connection, community. We sit at an inflection point, at this unique moment in time in which we can still demand a voice in humanity’s progress.
Our demands are clear:
The tech barons who come into our communities with plans to develop data center infrastructure must:
- pay to help support responsible coexistence with our natural environment
- pay a dividend to everyone that will be affected by the technology’s existence
- and pay to support the communities adjacent to your infrastructure
…or go somewhere else.
The people of Ohio are not the problem.
We are not standing in the way of development.
Our concerns about the future of our environment, our communities, and our economy should not be ignored when the demands of data center property developers and their clients refuse to consider the environment we occupy, its needs, our place in it, and how we leave it to our children.
